Review

Photojournalist David Adams is on a mission to follow the route that Alexander the Great took to Asia and learn more about the legendary Bronze Age civilisations that thrived along the River Oxus. It’s a complicated journey, taking Adams through several countries ending in –stan and involving long, dusty road trips. Dusty being important, as it’s likely that Alexander used a system of waterways from the Black Sea to the Caspian and beyond at a time when water levels were up to 200ft higher than they are today.

He’s an engaging presenter, and reconstructions of some of the ancient cities he passes through really help to bring this once fertile culture to life.

Summary

David Adams journeys along the Amu Darya river in Central Asia, telling the stories of ancient civilisations discovered by Alexander the Great that flourished in the region. In the first edition, he discovers the ruins of a 4,000-year-old city in Turkmenistan.
