Review

Here’s an hour’s pleasant escape – to the glorious isolation of the Hebrides, or the “wind-scoured and rugged” Hebrides on the “wild west coast of Scotland” in the “restless Atlantic Ocean”, according to narrator Ewan McGregor. It’s autumn, which means lowering skies and frequent, engulfing storms. In the first of a four-part series (shown on BBC Scotland in May) we watch swallows who have made their home on Islay’s whisky distillery, and watch a fight for supremacy between two stags.

Summary

Ewan McGregor narrates this documentary following the lives of animals struggling to survive on the archipelago off the west coast of mainland Scotland. Young swallows, otters and grey seals face the biggest storms and highest tides of the year as autumn arrives, while thousands of geese and swans migrate to the islands for winter, only to find white-tailed eagles ready to hunt them.
