Review

What would it be like to live a Robinson Crusoe existence on a tiny tropical island? Ben Fogle finds out for the first of a series where he stays with people who have re-made lives in remote, wild corners of the earth.

Dave Glasheen was a Sydney businessman who lost £6million in the crash of 1987. So he downsized to the tiny island of Restoration on the northern fringes of the Great Barrier Reef, self-sufficient, isolated and – judging by his conversations with Fogle – dreaming of mermaids. It looks like a tough existence but a beautiful one. The catch is that at 69, Dave may soon lose everything for the second time.

Summary

Ben Fogle meets people who have moved to inhospitable parts of the world after leaving the rat race behind. He begins by travelling to Restoration Island in Australia's Great Barrier Reef to visit former businessman David Glasheen, who lost $10million in the stock market crash of 1987 - as well as his marriage and his home. David is the sole inhabitant of the volcanic island, living in a house made of recycled material and making beer to trade with local fishermen for food.
