S3-E2 Grand Designs: Most Challenging Builds

Catch Up

Rural living doesn’t instantly bring images of cutting edge architecture to mind. Barns, thatched cottages and poky farmhouses, yes, but not striking, contemporary buildings with swooping roofs and glass walls. However, Kevin McCloud thinks there is a quiet revolution going on in our countryside and to prove it, he reminds us of some of Grand Designs’ most extraordinary country homes.

Among them is a super-eco house in Kent, an ultra-modern farmhouse slipping down a Berkshire hill, a renovated water treatment works in Chesterfield and an innovative oak-timbered home built on top of a tiny Cornish cottage, which Kevin describes as “one of the nicest homes I’ve ever, ever been in”.

Kevin McCloud charts the progress of Leanne Smith and Chris Jones as they embark on an ambitious project in Chesterfield, Derbyshire - converting a disused waterworks into a dream home. As the site is totally run-down and disconnected from any services, the couple face an uphill battle to complete the task and stay within their £145,000 budget.
