No one who has been to the Scilly Isles needs much convincing that they’re full of wonders, but Ray Mears goes looking for some of the less obvious local treats.

The peculiar thing about the Fortunate Isles is that despite being battered by Atlantic rollers the climate is so mild that sub-tropical plants flourish there. Exotic species like the South African Hottentot fig grow wild and the archipelago is also home to a very rare species of insect, the red barbed ant, which a local expert helps Ray track down. Ray also demonstrates how to harvest limpets along the rocky shore and even better, how to make a limpet risotto.

The survival expert explores the Isles of Scilly off the Cornish coast, where mild temperatures create an ideal habitat for species of wildlife normally associated with warmer climes. Exotic plants like the South African Hottentot fig thrive in the area, while an abundance of insects, including the rare red-barbed ant, means that migrant birds such as barn swallows use the islands as a source of sustenance.
