Photographer Giles Duley lost both legs and an arm after he stepped on an improvised explosive device while he was embedded with the US Army during the Afghan war. There’s excruciating footage of Duley immediately after the incident, teeth gritted against the pain, as helicopter medical evacuation personnel work frantically to save his life.

After 18 months Duley returns to Afghanistan to photograph the work of an Italian charity that helps civilian amputees. It’s a harrowing, often desolate journey for everyone.

While on foot patrol with US soldiers in Afghanistan in February 2011, British humanitarian photographer Giles Duley lost both legs and an arm in an explosion. This film follows him 18 months later as he returns to the country where he nearly lost his life to complete his work documenting the impact of the war on civilians - now focusing on those who have sustained injuries similar to his own.
