A match against the upcoming World Cup hosts used to be the subject of national fervour, as “Carnaval” arrived at the capital along with beautiful fans and commentating clichés.

But now the lustre of the yellow shirt has dimmed. David Luiz, Oscar and Ramires strut round London every week in the blue of Chelsea. Ronaldinho, granted a sympathetic recall to the national side, is last decade’s news. Only Neymar, Santos’s gifted striker, still carries with him that unique South American mystique that delights fans – mainly because he’s so far resisted the golden beckoning of Europe.

England v Brazil (Kick-off 7.30pm). Adrian Chiles presents coverage of the friendly match at Wembley Stadium, which has been organised as part of the FA's 150th anniversary celebrations. While the outcome of tonight's clash is not critical, Roy Hodgson will appreciate the opportunity to gather his squad together for the first time this year, and see this as a good test against quality opposition before resuming the World Cup qualification campaign. England's record against Brazil is a poor one, with just three wins being recorded in 23 previous meetings, and the last victory coming in 1990, as they triumphed 1-0 in a friendly match at Wembley. The most recent encounter between these nations was also a friendly contest, and resulted in another victory for Brazil as they claimed a 1-0 win in Doha, Qatar in 2009. With commentary by Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend.
