Invasion of the Land

Series 1 - Episode 6 Invasion of the Land

We hardly need reminding that David Attenborough makes superb wildlife documentaries. But this landmark series from 1979 is worth watching many times over. In this edition he describes the move from water to land, handling a goliath frog with webbed feet that transform them into “dazzling athletes” capable of leaping more than 15 metres – that’s 100 times their body length. They’re noisy little creatures, too. Their mating call can be heard from up to a mile away.

Renowned naturalist David Attenborough looks at the evolution of amphibians 350 million years ago, when fish are thought to have crawled from water on to land, spawning newts and salamanders, and he also takes a look at the characteristics of a goliath frog.
