’s big problems, apart from Jeremy Piven’s windmilling arms (handcuff him someone) is the dreary subplot about shopgirl Agnes and her drunk dad.
It’s boring and, worse, whenever we leave the shop to go home with her, Mr Selfridge’s racing pulse slows to a dead stop. Who wants to see Agnes’s dingy flat when we can gaze upon lovely hats in the fashion department.
There’s a lot of excitement on the shop floor when Harry Selfridge hits on a publicity stunt involving Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. Her visit causes a stir when cocaine-fuelled songbird Miss Love feels neglected. She’s not the only one. Mrs Selfridge is so lonely she goes to the Chelsea Arts club with her hunky boyfriend to sneer at the Pre-Raphaelites.
Harry scores something of a coup when prima ballerina Anna Pavlova agrees to pay Selfridges a visit. However, Agnes's job looks to be under threat when a violent Reg reaches breaking point and gatecrashes the event - and things only get worse when Ellen invites herself along. Meanwhile, one of the department store's most loyal employees is caught stealing, a formidable new head of fashion arrives and Rose reveals her true identity to Roddy.
