If this is your favourite time of year and you hanker after snow and ice, hunker down for this revelatory documentary. It explores how artists have responded to lowering skies and harsh landscapes, from Pieter Bruegel the Elder in the 16th century (the first to paint a winter scene) to Bill Brandt (who photographed the harsh winter of 1947).
The likes of Grayson Perry, Kirsty Wark and Dan Snow dress up warmly to join art historians in conveying the historical context in which winter became a common artistic subject, pointing out that it was only as people became comfortable enough to withstand its rigours that they felt able to enjoy it.
Documentary exploring how man's struggle with the onset of winter has been depicted by Western painters across the centuries. Among the works featured is Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Hunters in the Snow from 1565 - one of the first paintings to sum up the season as a vision of beauty. With contributions by Grayson Perry, Will Self and Don McCullin, among others.
