Review

Usually this series serves up Brits mincing about in 1960s fashions or grinning and bearing caravan holidays. This edition, War and Peace, is a shade chillier, with a backdrop of the Cold War, and shows crisp footage of Britain parading its nuclear deterrent (Vulcan bombers) and an early CND protest rally in Trafalgar Square.

The Rank Organisation’s cameramen were also allowed on the other side of the Iron Curtain, to Berlin, Budapest, Leningrad and Prague, with the aim of showing that not all Communists were bogeymen. The subtitles work hard to put the clips into context: the Prague Spring of ’68 is particularly poignant.

Summary

Examining Look at Life's coverage of the Cold War, revealing how the programme captured anti-nuclear protests in London and the experiences of Berlin-based British forces. Plus, a look at the series' visit to eastern Europe, where it observed everyday life for people living behind the Iron Curtain.
