The phrase “turkey shoot” takes on a new significance in this fluffy escapade from Christmas 1974. When the men sheepishly own up to a pub crawl that got out of hand, a shaggy dog story ensues, culminating in said bird being shot. But that’s enough animal talk.
A horrified Mainwaring insists they apologise to the local farmer and offer compensation (on location, more and more food had to be used to entice the turkeys into position, so they ended up well fattened!).
But Jones decides they should organise a dinner for OAPs – cue the usual committee-meeting argy-bargy and a joke about dumplings. It’s a rambling affair, but as ever, it’s the details that enchant. A tardy Godfrey joins the platoon as they stand to attention for the captain. “I’m sorry sir, I didn’t know you’d started,” says the old soldier, with his customary disarming smile.
Pompous Captain Mainwaring proves he is a softie at heart by organising a turkey dinner as a Christmas treat for the struggling senior citizens of Walmington-on-Sea. Festive episode from 1974, starring Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier and John Laurie.
