Arthur Lowe was given top billing in Dad’s Army for a reason: he was simply the finest actor. His versatility is very much on parade in this 1975 Christmas special, in which Captain Mainwaring is paid an unwelcome visit by his brother Barry. Playing a dual role (buttoned-down pillar of society versus florid sponger) was a dream opportunity for Lowe, and he seizes it with aplomb. He even plays against himself via the creaky magic of early split-screen.
It’s Frazer who profits most from what he gleans from Barry about the good captain. The wily, wild-eyed Scot claps with childlike glee: “He’ll be exposed to the world!”
Elsewhere, Mainwaring is appalled by Pike writing for The Hotspur about his experiences in the Home Guard, Hodges pigs out on cucumber sandwiches and Godfrey’s crestfallen expression is probably the most pitiable thing you’ll ever see.
Frazer is unable to hide his delight when Captain Mainwaring's disreputable brother gatecrashes a sherry party for local dignitaries and tries to reclaim a pocket watch his father promised him. Comedy first aired in 1975, starring Arthur Lowe in a dual role, with John Le Mesurier and John Laurie.
