Ken Follett's Journey into the Dark Ages

Great Women

Series 1 - Episode 2 Great Women

Part two of two. Ken Follett examines the lives of three women whose resolve, intelligence and bravery helped to shape history at a time when their sex had few rights. He begins with 12th-century German abbess St Hildegard of Bingen, who challenged the Church's hierarchy, and 13th-century French mystic Marguerite Porete, who wrote a book that led to her being burnt to death as a heretic. Follett then profiles Joan of Arc, who suffered a similar fate but became posthumously a national heroine in France.
