Review

Nobody would hold up World without End as high-class fare to sit alongside the likes of, say, Borgen over on BBC4. It’s frothy medieval silliness, but done with such conviction and on such a scale that it’s very enjoyable. The rambling story keeps birthing so many new subplots full of scheming monks or crooked squires or wronged women, that you can’t help but get swept along.

After last week’s disaster, the townsfolk need to find a way to put the “bridge” back into “Kingsbridge”, but the casualties have also made Caris dream about building a hospital – something she and would-be lover Merthin (Tom Weston-Jones) could plan together perhaps? Meanwhile, the bishop is busy debauching with his father’s fiancée (in the confessional, no less) and King Edward decides to kick off the 100 Years War.

Summary

Following the bridge collapse, Caris takes charge of caring for the casualties as the townsfolk of Kingsbridge mourn their losses. A plan to rebuild the structure is hampered by the newly appointed Lord of Wigleigh, who is intent on carrying out Queen Isabella's order to stop work on it. Godwyn is hell-bent on becoming the new prior and discredits younger favourite Thomas, while the Queen carries out a crafty plan to convince her son Edward III to declare war on her enemies.
