Review

There’s a lozenge of wisdom before every Borgen episode – something profound by Bertrand Russell prefaces the first in tonight’s double bill. But it might as well say “Be careful what you wish for” after Prime Minister Birgitte’s attempts to bring a wayward colleague into line backfire spectacularly.

She’s having trouble with her environment minister, but when she asks her unpleasant spin-doctor Kasper to have a little word in the right ears the government looks like it might topple.

Talking of the odious Kasper, he gets most of the second episode to himself, when we learn quite a lot more about why he’s such a narcissistic commitment-phobe.

When a right-wing politician demands tough penalties for child criminals, Kasper flashes back to profoundly upsetting events in his childhood. The storytelling is clunky, but it’s still powerful stuff.

Summary

Kasper persuades Birgitte to use underhand tactics as the government prepares to negotiate the environmental element of the new reform package, and Katrine receives a job offer that goes against her personal beliefs. Meanwhile, the prime minister's children are affected by their mother's work-related stress. Drama, starring Sidse Babett Knudsen, Birgitte Hjort Sorensen and Pilou Asbaek. In Danish.
