Review

Ryan Murphy (of Glee fame) has crafted another winning, warm-hearted comedy. He and co-writer Ali Adler’s story of two gay men (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells) who invite the surrogate mother (Georgia King) carrying their IVF baby to live with them, along with her nine-year-old daughter and cantankerous grandmother (Ellen Barkin), mixes sentimentality with just the right amount of sarcasm to stop it slipping into the saccharine.

It may be wildly derivative (compare it with Modern Family and Murphy’s own Glee) but the cast all have good chemistry and are largely likeable, though you may gasp when the excellent Barkin unleashes a torrent of bigoted views.

Summary

Comedy about Bryan and David, a gay couple who go in search of a surrogate mother after deciding a baby is the one thing missing from their lives. They are put into contact with waitress Goldie, but soon find she has plenty of troubles of her own to contend with. Starring Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha and Georgia King.
