Explorers are not just scraggly men in beards trekking across bleak landscapes. This whistlestop tour through some of the most extraordinary scientific frontiers reminds us that now “explorers” are just as likely to be wearing lab coats as anoraks.

Like Dr Gary Kobinger, who dons a chemical warfare suit and steps into an airtight lab to test possible vaccines for ebola. Or Dr Sam Bhayani, the “robotic surgeon”, who controls a series of electronic arms called “DaVinci” to perform delicate operations. They’re all pushing the limits of human achievement — and there’s not a sleeping bag in sight.

A look at the pioneering work of the National Geographic Society's adventurers and scientists, from the fight to cure cancer to James Cameron's latest deep sea mission.
