David Attenborough's Galapagos

Series 1 - Episode 2 Adaptation

The flora and fauna may be the stars of Galapagos, but here David Attenborough tells the story of the backroom boys: the forces that shaped the archipelago and helped produce such a varied cast. So there’s some nifty CGI showing how volcanic eruptions spewed the islands into the sea.

There’s still room for the wildlife, with news of recent discoveries such as the nearly blind, half-scorpion half-spider that survives deep below the surface in crepuscular lava tunnels, and the remarkable revelation that marine iguanas survive El Niño by shrinking their skeleton.

The broadcaster reveals how life has learnt to adapt quickly in the ever-changing volcanic landscape, resulting in species that exist nowhere else in the world. David investigates the driving forces behind their evolution, exploring the appearance and behaviour of remarkable creatures and vegetation including giant whale sharks, marine iguanas and seemingly normal dandelion seeds that grow into plants the size of trees.
