One Born Every Minute

One Born Every Minute

Series 4 - Episode 1

As a new series of this uplifting though frequently leg-crossing series begins, the midwives at Leeds General Infirmary receive a package of “active birth” equipment.

It might look like the makings of a kids’ adventure playground, but everything is designed to help women to give birth either squatting or kneeling. “We were never meant to be on our backs,” says a cheery midwife.

As for the patients, poor Stacey keeps traipsing into the unit, convinced she’s about to give birth. Her husband becomes increasingly furious and impatient but, as staff carefully tell him, the baby will come when it’s ready. If you can bear the primal howling from the mums your heart will melt as yet more furious babies make their wet way into the world.

With cameras now recording life on two busy maternity wards in Leeds, the documentary features the stories of Stacey and Ramona. The former is expecting her second child, but every time she thinks she is in labour, it turns out to be a false alarm and staff send her home. Meanwhile, Ramona wants to give birth naturally with husband Marvin by her side, having had an emergency C-section in the past. Elsewhere, the hospital is promoting `active birth' and trainee yoga instructor Sara wholeheartedly embraces the idea.
