Review

Celebrity-turned-cheesemaker Sean Wilson, formerly Martin Platt in Corrie, now produces award-winning cheese, and worked at Michelin-starred Northcote in Lancashire. Wilson must know his stuff about the region’s food traditions, but he seems to have been advised against showing it.

There’s no time for thinking properly about the North’s rich food culture when he’s got to caper about, Northernly, on fishing boats, calling people “cocker”. But there’s the occasional bit of interest. He revives a dish of stuffed lamb’s hearts called “love in disguise”, and discovers that the best way to get the people of Liverpool to eat tripe is to make it into something that resembles chicken nuggets.

Summary

Former Coronation Street star and award-winning cheese-maker Sean Wilson explores the culinary heritage of the north of England. He starts his adventure in Whitby, North Yorkshire, where he prepares fish and chips with mushy peas, before heading to Morpeth in Northumberland to try to convert a group of people to the delights of offal. Sean then makes a two-and-a-half ton meat-and-potato pie in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire, before ending the first leg of his journey in Liverpool, where he serves up tripe to some unsuspecting shoppers.
