Review

Actor Patrick Stewart profiles his childhood hero, legendary racing driver Stirling Moss. Together they explore Moss’s career as a driver of incredible skill and very British decency: in 1958 his sporting attitude to arch-rival Mike Hawthorne effectively cost him the world championship.

Not that Moss was a saint. Out of hours, he was your original 1950s playboy, ever ready to “meet the crumpet and have fun”, he recalls. The life of a racing driver then was, he reckons, “as good a life as anyone could ask for”, though it took a near-fatal turn with his career-ending crash at Goodwood in 1962. He discusses the effects of that with Stewart and together they drive some gorgeous period cars, including a lovely Mercedes 300 SL gullwing, which they pilot along the route of the Mille Miglia road race in Italy. It turns out, at 83, Moss hasn’t slowed down all that much.

Summary

Actor Patrick Stewart and former racing driver Stirling Moss travel to Florence in a classic Mercedes to retrace the route of Italy's most famous road race - the Mille Miglia - and discuss the possibility that a near-fatal crash may have been the best thing that ever happened to Moss. But how will Patrick cope when he drives a 1957 Formula One car at the scene of Stirling's historic British Grand Prix victory?
