The life and work of 17th-century Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi, whose depictions of biblical stories frequently took the female perspective. In Susanna and the Elders, she defied convention to depict the woman vulnerable beneath two older, conspiring men, and her multiple versions of Judith Slaying Holofernes reveal powerful protagonists beheading the invading general. Art historians and the author Alexandra LaPierre explore the influence of her life on her paintings, particularly her rape at 17 by a friend of her father.
