S2-E12 The Choice

S2-E12 The Choice

Settle down for a film-length treat, because tonight Homeland builds to the extraordinary climax it deserves. More than any drama I can remember, it keeps tripping us up, muddying the waters as to whom we’re rooting for. Take last week’s episode, when Brody’s daughter stumbled on him just as he was hiding a bomb vest in his car boot: our reflex was to hope he didn’t get rumbled. We’ve ended up rooting for the guy with a bomb vest full of ball bearings! What’s going on?

That toying with our sympathy continues in a season finale of phenomenal power. It’s like a Spooks episode raised to the level of genius, and with shatteringly sad human drama, too.

It starts with a stunning, ice-cool monologue from Brody, as he steels himself for something terrible. Meanwhile, poor battered Carrie is an outcast, suffering the perennial curse of the maverick and the nut-job: what if it’s not you who’s mad, but the rest of the world?

Brody makes his final preparations to die for his country, claiming the vice-president is a domestic threat to the US. As he does so, his fugitive fellow marine Walker is setting up his rifle across the road from where the policy summit is taking place. Carrie is confined to bed after her betrayal and sacking - but when she finally realises what is happening, she convinces Virgil to drive her to the scene, hoping she won't be too late. Feature-length conclusion of the thriller, starring Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin, Mandy Patinkin and David Harewood. Last in the series.
