It’s the final push (or rather puff) as the cream of Britain’s young brass players compete for the Overall Prize in Radio 2’s prestigious Young Brass Awards, presented by Frank Renton and Simone Rebello.
All three finalists have already won category awards — 16-year-old cornet and flugel horn player Thomas Fountain (Player of the Year Under 18), 20-year-old bass trombone player Josiah Walters (Player of the Year Under 21) and Northampton-based Youth Brass 2000 (Youth Brass Band of the Year). Each will perform a ten-minute programme as they challenge for the big prize — and the chance of further broadcasts as a featured artist on Radio 2.
The concert comes from the Royal Northern College of Music’s Festival of Brass and the judges include Ewan Easton, principal tuba of the Hallé.
The overall title is decided as section winners Youth Brass 2000, Thomas Fountain (cornet and flugel horn) and Josiah Walters (bass trombone) each perform a 10-minute programme in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music's Festival of Brass. Frank Renton and Simone Rebello present and Russell Gray conducts the Royal Northern College of Music Brass Band.
