An Island Parish: Sark: Best Foot Forward

An Island Parish: Sark: Best Foot Forward

Series 7

Only An Island Parish can get away with the sentence: “It remains to be seen what the reaction will be to tonight’s foot-washing.” These things matter on Sark, a tiny Channel Island with only two churches — one Anglican, the other Methodist. Their respective clerics, Gill Nicholls and Karen Le Mout, are best pals and decide to hold a joint service where – shockingly – Gill washes Karen’s feet.

The purse-lipped congregation is obviously not happy, but everyone is too polite to say anything unpleasant. People just smile as they pedal their bicycles along the island’s pretty roads (there are no cars on Sark) in this mellow piece of sunny escapism.

Shepherd David Scott is being kept busy with lambing - as well as nervously awaiting a new arrival of his own. Newcomer Rev Gill Nicholls is learning fast about life on the island and she and Methodist lay preacher Karen Le Mouton are planning a pioneering joint Easter service - but how will it be received by traditionalists? Documentary chronicling life on Sark in the Channel Islands.
