Maestro or Mephisto - The Real Georg Solti

Maestro or Mephisto - The Real Georg Solti

Solti wasn’t just a great conductor but a giant in the world of classical music, renowned for his perfectionism, fiery temper and inexhaustible energy well into his 80s. He died in 1997 and now, to honour his centenary, the BBC is exhuming his final, candid interview.

It provides the backbone of this profile, which re-examines the “legend and legacy” of Solti with observations from friends including Plácido Domingo, Angela Gheorghiu, Murray Perahia and Kiri Te Kanawa, and from his widow, Lady Solti (former BBC presenter Valerie Pitts).

A centenary concert from Chicago is due to air on BBC4 next Friday.

To mark the centenary of the acclaimed conductor's birth, this documentary examines the career of a musical perfectionist and explores his legacy. Featuring archive footage and contributions by Placido Domingo, Valery Gergiev, Angela Gheorghiu and Kiri Te Kanawa.
