Nick Nickleby

Series 1 - Episode 1

If Sherlock Holmes can be brought into the present and largely filmed in Cardiff, why shouldn’t a Dickens classic be given a contemporary wash and filmed in and around Belfast? And if you’re familiar with the workings of the original Nicholas Nickleby, you’ll have fun spotting what’s been altered in this daily, daytime serial.

Today, Nick and his family fall on hard times, must leave their Devon farm and go to London to call upon Uncle Ralph, a sinister businessman. Before long, Nick is dispatched to Yorkshire to work at Dotheolds Hall, a care home for the elderly, run by bullies.

At times, the outré Dickensian characters sit oddly in a modern setting, but the theme of elder abuse seems timely, while being an uncomfortable watch — and Andrew Simpson is engaging as Nick, and Linda Bassett
a joy as Mrs Smike, the old lady he’s determined to save.

Following the death of his father, Nick Nickleby turns to his uncle Ralph for help, unaware that he has his own sinister plans for the family. Separated from his loved ones, Nick is sent to work in Ralph's flagship care home, but he soon discovers a dark secret at the heart of the business. Drama based on the book The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens, starring Andrew Simpson and Adrian Dunbar.
