The X Factor

Series 9 - Episode 16

The revelation of the series so far? No, not Ella Henderson’s mature readings of songs older than her, James Arthur’s ragged emotion or Jahmene Douglas’s ability to add extra notes in places the original songwriter never dreamt they could fit. For my money it’s new mentor Nicole Scherzinger.
The former leader of Pussycat Dolls – a terribly crass, machine-tooled American girl band – has cut loose judging the live shows, arguing fruitily with Gary Barlow, waging a style war with Tulisa and regularly stepping right on the line of what you can say on pre-watershed TV, with her “baby oil” and her “huge balls”.

OK, so her bid to introduce the word “gorgeois” into our language failed, but she’s a lot of fun. Tonight she sends Jahmene and James back into battle as the last nine sing for survival.

Last week, Jade Ellis left the competition as the judges decided to save Union J, while Lucy Spraggan missed the show due to illness. Now, The X Factor is beginning to hot up as the remaining contestants, including Lucy, all being well, sing number one hits in the fifth live studio round. Host Dermot O'Leary will be on hand to keep a cool head and act as a calming influence as mentors' tempers fray and the acts face increasing pressure to pull out all the stops and impress with note-perfect performances. Nobody is safe from elimination and, with the final still five weeks away, there will inevitably be more surprise exits throughout the month.
