It’s a significant anniversary for Grand Designs tonight with the programme’s 100th property. Fittingly it’s a real showstopper, a glorious mixture of old and modern.

Owners Leigh Osborne and Graham Voce have worked magic with a derelict, Grade II-listed, 19th-century, 99ft-high water tower in Lambeth, south London, that belonged to a workhouse where Charlie Chaplin once lived. Says an enraptured Kevin McCloud: “It combines everything we’ve ever done into one project. It’s about conservation versus new build, and the junction at which they meet.”

The tower houses four bedrooms with a fabulous 360-degree view, with a lift shaft alongside. At the bottom is a modern, cube-shaped living space.

Leigh Osborne and Graham Voce want to convert and extend a landmark 150-year-old water tower in Kennington, south London, into a luxury home. Grade II-listed, derelict and with 6ft-thick walls, it's a huge challenge for the pair, who also plan to build two structures at the base - a lift shaft connected by a series of glass tunnels, and a modern living space. The result will be a four-bedroom property over nine floors, complete with a room at the top offering spectacular 360-degree views across the capital. Presented by Kevin McCloud.
