Great British Food Revival

Strawberries and Watercress

Series 3 - Episode 1 Strawberries and Watercress

There are people in this country who are Michel Roux Jr addicts. They can only go for so long before they start to get twitchy, wondering when the French chef will appear again. The time is now: as part of Great British Food Revival, he has chosen to champion the glories of the quintessential British summer fruit, the strawberry. He sets up a taste test with tennis royalty to see how discerning they are, and discovers a little about the strawberry of the future – the tantalisingly-named EM 1764 – from horticulture boffins.

The other chef to appear is James Martin, whose chosen ingredient is peppery watercress. But he’s on all the time so he’s not quite as special.

The show exploring British produce returns, beginning with Michel Roux Jr investigating strawberries. He gets tennis pundits Sue Barker, Andrew Castle and Tim Henman to take part in a blind taste test, learns how a charity is reviving the practice of gathering strawberries by gleaning, and visits East Malling in Kent to get a glimpse of the fruit's possible future. Meanwhile, James Martin tries to revive the fortunes of watercress, working as a street salesman in London's Covent Garden and meeting a man with a remarkable amount of knowledge about the salad crop.
