Like me, you’ve probably changed your mind often as to who’ll make it all the way to the final, because these bakers can produce something amazing in one round, only to serve up a disaster in the next. So, despite his flashes of brilliance with a key lime pie, as well as earning a Paul Hollywood handshake for his lardy buns, Ryan has gone. And last week’s teacake technical challenge was one of a run of disasters for an early favourite of mine (no names) who sadly hung up their flour-dusted apron for good.
Taking part in semi-final week (skip this sentence if you don’t want even a whisper of who that may be) are four contestants who have each been star baker at some point.
Mel and Sue have a laugh with the French theme, but the petits fours round isn’t much fun for the bakers, mainly because not everyone seems to understand that petit means small. The technical challenge and the showstopper round – a choux pastry gateau – are equally daunting.
Four bakers remain in the hunt for the title of Britain's best amateur baker, but they all need to raise their game when they tackle a trio of classic patisserie confections in the semi-final. A petits fours-making challenge provides an early test of nerves, before the quartet face the toughest technical task in the show's history - creating a fraisier, a sponge cake filled with mousse and strawberries. As tempers rise and confidence falters, the contestants have one last chance to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry by baking a showstopping choux gateau - before discovering who has earned a place in the 2012 final. Presented by Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc.
