The X Factor

Series 9 - Episode 12

The road to the X Factor live shows is always a bumpy one. And the journey for many acts on this series – which some have accused of cranking up the melodrama just a shade too high – has been pretty rocky.

There were Oscar-winning displays of hysterical emotion, while in the brief time between boot camp and judges’ houses, groups were once again rejected, recalled and repackaged. And of course there have been the usual sensational headlines involving tragedy, trauma and simple petulance.

Now all the final 12 acts have to do is to turn in a good live performance each week – preferably without falling to their knees and sobbing.

Thousands of aspiring pop stars turned up at the auditions, more than 200 battled it out at boot camp and the best of those made it through to the judges' houses. Now, the competition really begins as the final 13 perform live for the judges and millions of viewers at home, and things are a little different this year as the contestants are allowed to sing their own material to stand out from their rivals. Gary Barlow mentors the over-28s - Melanie Masson, Carolynne Poole and Kye Sones - Nicole Scherzinger looks after the boys - James Arthur, Rylan Clark and Jahmene Douglas - Tulisa has got the girls - Jade Ellis, Ella Henderson and Lucy Spraggan - and Louis Walsh is in charge of the groups - GMD3 (who are coming up with a new name), MK1 and Union J. These 12 will be joined by the wildcard entry - either Christopher Maloney, Adam Burridge, Amy Mottram or Times Red. One Direction also perform on stage, hoping to show the boy band acts how it's done. Hosted by Dermot O'Leary.
