It’s baking both inside and outside the tent of dreams on a very rare hot and sunny Somerset summer’s day. So how about cutting the quarter-final contestants a bit of slack as they come to display their chocolate-covered marshmallows in 30°C temperatures, wonders Mary Berry of her fellow judge, Paul Hollywood.
The chocolate will surely melt, so “on this occasion you are going to have to be really, really kind”, says baking’s Miss Marple to its Inspector Morse. Hollywood looks like he would rather deep-fry his own ears and dust them with sugar.
The five remaining bakers are understandably tense and wan as they get ready to conquer crispbreads (“I will be testing the sharpness of every single one of them,” announces a gimlet-eyed Hollywood, and by God you believe him), those choccy marshmallows and a mind-blowing showstopper, a gingerbread house.
The quarter-final of the competition sees the remaining amateur bakers tackle biscuit-based challenges. Their first task involves making a large batch of crispbreads - each of which must come up to Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood's exacting standards - before the technical challenge, in which they battle time and temperature to create a set of six chocolate teacakes. The last round sees the hopefuls baking and assembling a gingerbread house, before Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins reveal who has qualified for the 2012 semi-final - and who is going home.
