Here’s a chance to eavesdrop on opulence, peek at the lives of people so wealthy that “austerity” to them might just as well be the name of a new perfume.Though a massive advert for Claridge’s, a glossy five-star hotel in London, Jane Treays’s documentary is irresistible. We see preparations for a foreign princess and her 27 female guests: “The princess wants a very very soft bed,” says a housekeeper, and that’s what she gets, cushioned by four duvets.
Then there are the handwritten welcome cards, left for every
guest. How does one address U2’s The Edge? “You can’t write, ‘Dear
Mr The Edge’,” tuts general manager Thomas Kochs.
For the first time in its long history, the famously discreet luxury hotel in Mayfair, central London, opens its doors to documentary cameras, with director Jane Treays spending a year behind the scenes following staff and guests. The Melchors from California arrive for their annual two-week stay, rekindling their relationship with personal butler Michael Lynch, while energetic general manager Thomas Kochs travels to New York to drum up new business from leading US travel agents.
