Review

Cameras follow the amiable Charles Gordon-Lennox, Earl of March, as he attends to the businesses and events that bring revenue to the 300-year-old Goodwood estate in Sussex and – the theory goes – make it a going concern rather than a fading anachronism.

Glorious Goodwood racing week, the Festival of Speed, a retro ball, an organic farm – we see the workings of them all. The earl appears a sweet, dapper aristo, with the usual worries about not being the one to blow the heritage. It’s a charmed existence, but a stressful one, too.

There’s a telling scene where, at the flat-race meeting, the earl cranes for a view of the action from the back of his box, but is blocked by his own guests. It’s one of several well-observed moments in a revealing film.

Summary

The second in this two-part documentary exploring modern-day high society follows Charles Gordon-Lennox, heir to the Dukedom of Richmond and owner of Goodwood in West Sussex. The estate has achieved fame thanks to its famous racecourse and Grand Prix circuit, but it also includes an aerodrome, a hotel, a golf course and an organic farm. Gordon-Lennox's efforts have made Goodwood self-sufficient - but it has come at a price.
