The X Factor

Series 9 - Episode 19

The decision to allow acts that already had a manager to take part, in order to get “more developed” artists on the show, suggested that The X Factor’s bosses wanted to raise the bar this year. And it’s true that they’ve found some remarkably talented singers (either through the usual audition route or by invitation).

But the Great British public loves to throw a spanner in the works, which is why there’s always a Jedward/Wagner who stays in the competition much longer than they perhaps deserve.

At the time of writing, the two weakest singers were still contenders, but perhaps it’s time we let the real talent shine through.

Last week saw one of the biggest shock results in the history of The X Factor as Ella Henderson and James Arthur - until then two of the favourites to win the competition - found themselves in the bottom two. The judges took it to deadlock and it was Ella who was eliminated. Now, the pressure has never been higher as James, Jahmene, Rylan, Christopher and Union J each take on Abba and Motown hits, competing for places in the semi-final - but which of them will disappoint at this crucial stage and who will move another step closer to a record deal and life at the top of the charts? Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Tulisa and Louis Walsh listen out for flat notes as the potential pop stars face their most important performances so far. Dermot O'Leary presents.
