The Joy of the Single

The Joy of the Single

Which was your first one? Mine was the theme tune to The Flintstones, on orange vinyl! On this tribute to the seven-inch, 45rpm single, a suitably obsessive cast including Slade skipper Noddy Holder, studio boffin Trevor Horn and pop svengali Paul Morley chip in with their pivotal purchases. Anyone who’s ever pored over the sleeve, label or B-side will love this fanatical exploration, a tale of spin if ever there was one.

The 60th anniversary of the UK singles chart is marked at 10.30pm with another groovy whirl through the BBC archive. The Bee Gees, T Rex and the Spice Girls are just some of the selectees.

Documentary taking a journey through the decades to celebrate cherished stories and memories associated with the music single. Artists including Jack White, Noddy Holder, Richard Hawley and Suzi Quatro reveal the powerful impact that singles have had on successive generations, from the rock 'n' rollers of the 1950s to the MP3 downloaders of today.
