Ahmed Jama fled his war-torn native Somalia for London, where he trained as a chef and settled down with his wife and children. But the call of his homeland was strong and, to the distress of his family, he returned to set up a hotel and restaurant in Mogadishu, simply because he felt that he had to.

Jama is a remarkable man who remains unbowed, even when suicide bombers from the Islamist insurgent group al-Shabab kill 20 diners in his café. Five of his staff members were among the dead, but the day after the atrocity, the remainder of Jama’s employees turned up for work. Jama won’t leave, he tells reporter Aidan Hartley: “It’s still my journey and I haven’t finished it.”
