Country House Rescue

Kelly House

Series 2 - Episode 5 Kelly House

The Kelly family have lived in Kelly House in Kelly Village for 1,000 years, but the money they once had has long since left the dynastic purse. What makes this repeat series so engaging is that Ruth Watson confronts each family’s emotional makeup as well as their crumbling country piles.

She’s moved to tears by the plight of the current squire’s wife, Liz, who agreed to move the family temporarily into an unconverted barn in the 1970s and is still there. ”Not many women would put up with what Liz has been through,” sniffs Ruth.

Sympathy aside, this is one family that’s hard to help. Ruth declares the Kelly blood shot through with indecision, but can she employ carrot and stick to make them change?

Ruth Watson visits the Kelly family in Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, owners of Grade I-listed building Kelly House, which dates back to the 1740s. A lack of funds has prevented treatment of walls blighted by dry rot, ceilings bowed by damp and a roof in need of repair. Ruth hopes to persuade Warin Kelly to set up a training programme for fledgling craftsmen so the property can benefit from their work.
