Review

It’s tarts this week: tartes tatins, treacle tarts and elaborate fruit tarts worthy of displaying in a patisserie window. Yet while the bakers whisk up crème pâtissière, macademia praline and teeny decorative macaroons with apparent ease, it’s the intertwined lattice pastry top for the technical challenge that confounds them. “I can’t believe I’m crying – it’s only a bloody treacle tart!” says one.

Ah, but it’s no ordinary treacle tart, it’s a Mary Berry treacle tart. During the first episode the show was trending on Twitter with viewers tweeting Friends-style titles such as The One with the Boiled Babas, but at this point you may like to try the cake version of a drinking game instead. Every time someone says “no pressure”, “soggy bottom” or “under-baked”, scoff some baked goods of your choice. You’ll have put half a stone on by the time this week’s star baker is announced.

Summary

The 10 remaining amateur cooks' tart-making abilities are put to the test in the third round of the competition. Their first task is to bake a tarte Tatin, with judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry looking for intriguing flavour combinations to tickle their tastebuds. The hopefuls then face another daunting technical challenge as they try to replicate Mary's seemingly straightforward recipe for treacle tart, but the delicate task of adding a lattice top leaves some contestants flummoxed. Finally, they try to create an ornate fruit tart fit for gracing the window display of a leading patisserie - before discovering the identities of the latest Star Baker and the person who will be heading home. Presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. From 2012.
