Review

ITV used to be known for psychological thrillers, often involving big houses and couples caught up in sinister goings-on. This 2012 adaptation of Blake Morrison’s novel (Encore is repeating all three episodes) feels very much in that tradition.

The excellently creepy Shaun Evans plays Ian, an impoverished teacher who is invited to spend a long weekend at the tumbledown country house of his old friend Olly, a rich, dashing barrister (Rupert Penry-Jones, obviously), who once stole Ian’s girlfriend. From there a sinuous story unfolds about unpleasant people being unpleasant to each other, but in ways that are stylishly filmed and strangely gripping.

Summary

A summer break in the Suffolk countryside provides a rare opportunity for two couples to spend time together. The men, Ian and Ollie, met at university, but they have gone on to lead very different lives - one is a primary school teacher and the other a wealthy barrister. It should be an idyllic holiday, a chance for the group to catch up and relax, but the competitive edge to the men's relationship soon rises to the surface, with terrible consequences for everyone. Suspense thriller adapted from the novel by Blake Morrison, starring Rupert Penry-Jones, Shaun Evans, Genevieve O'Reilly and Claire Keelan.
