Review

“This is not fittin’ in with me dream at all,” sighs wedding-dress maker Thelma Madine as she contemplates the wreckage that is the first fortnight of her six-month training scheme for young traveller girls. It’s depressing for us too because they’re not doing themselves any favours, playing to the stereotype by being aggressive, lazy, unreliable and mouthy. Their lack of education is woeful, but it’s their attitude that really lets them down. They really can’t see that fighting, swearing and sticking pins in each other is not the way to behave in the workplace - or anywhere else, for that matter.

Summary

Thelma Madine's trainees begin their course in dress-making, and for some, it's the first paid work they have ever done. As the girls try to get used to life in a professional workplace, 16-year-old Irish traveller Margaret clashes with colleague Bridget and struggles with authority, while Shannon, the youngest of the group, ends up being suspended for an act that Thelma describes as `pure evil'.
