This is one of the most surprising television success stories of recent years. Who would have thought that a series about amateur bakers would routinely bring in more than four million viewers every week, a staggering figure for BBC2 and one that must be worrying Holby City over on BBC1.

In its own civilised way Bake Off is as tense as any medical drama, as gripping as any cop show, as judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood stroll from one contestant’s workstation to another, meeting triumphs and disasters. It’s puddings this week (read about my visit to the set on page 51) as the remaining bakers have to impress Hollywood and Berry with two types of sponge pudding. The technical challenge involves a Berry favourite, a queen of puddings, while the showstopper is a strudel.

The pressure continues to rise as the contestants' pudding-making skills face a stern examination. Their first task involves creating a pair of sponge dishes, before Mary Berry sets the latest technical challenge - recreating her recipe for the meringue-topped dessert queen of puddings. Finally the cooks try to get to grips with the intricacies of baking strudel in the showstopper round - before one of them leaves the competition for good. Presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. From 2012.
