Stephen Hawking's Grand Design

S1-E1 The Key to the Cosmos

S1-E1 The Key to the Cosmos

“Perhaps the secrets of the universe are ungraspable,” says Stephen Hawking, “and beyond the power of the human mind.” Luckily, helping us to grasp them is what the great man does best. In the first of three programmes, Hawking asks why the universe exists. Using a rundown of great moments of discovery from Isaac Newton and gravity to Richard Feynman, quantum mechanics and beyond, he explains how we have come to make sense of our world and the possibility of other universes.

The physicist explores the underlying principles of the cosmos. He examines why it exists and the reasons it follows certain rules and laws, taking in scientific history from the discovery of gravity to the development of string theory.
