Review

When one of his informants is found dead, George Gently (Martin Shaw) suspects the local police aren’t telling him the truth and visits an old colleague (Neil Pearson) for help. Meanwhile Bacchus (Lee Ingleby) questions a gibbering teenager whose brother has disappeared. Known as the Blackburn lads, they’re hooligans who have vandalised a children’s home and terrorised one of the autistic kids there.

The episode rams home much of the politically incorrect attitudes of the mid-60s but, in a beautifully realised exchange between Pearson and Shaw, it also explores some dark ideas that still resonate today.

Summary

The detective looks into the suspicious death of an old friend and informant. The investigation leads him to the local police station, where it becomes clear the officers are hiding something - and to complicate matters, the disappearance of a teenage boy is also linked to the case. Crime drama, with Martin Shaw, Lee Ingleby and guest stars Neil Pearson, Dean Lennox Kelly and Mark Benton.
