Surprisingly, this was Steven Moffat’s first proper stab at the Time Lord’s archfoes. After nearly 50 years of extermination, it’s no mean feat coming up with original angles, or restoring a measure of menace to the Daleks, but that’s just what he achieves in this superbly ambitious piece of television.
His big surprise, of course, was that the craziest Dalek in the asylum turns out to be chirpy new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman — arriving five episodes earlier than supposed. And look out for the creepy bus driver near the start: it’s Jeremy Young, who played
’s very first villain, caveman Kal, way back in 1963.
The Doctor, Amy and Rory are kidnapped by their deadly foe the Daleks and forced to go on a seemingly impossible mission - to enter the Asylum, a planetary prison containing the most terrifying and insane of the aliens' kind. They need an escape route, and fast - but with a mad, mechanised army closing in, and the Ponds' relationship in meltdown, it is up to the Time Lord to save not only their lives but his friends' marriage. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill co-star.
