Review

If you’ve ever yearned for a TV series that devotes unconscionable amounts of screen time to showing people doing the ironing, then Chatsworth is for you. A massive tablecloth is badly wrinkled and Chatsworth’s housekeepers do their best to bring it up to snuff. We watch them ironing it, but visitors complain that it’s not ironed enough, so we watch the cheerful staff iron yet another table cloth of the same size (“It’s difficult to get all the creases out”). Who knew life in a grand country house could be such a thrill-ride of tension? If that isn’t enough excitement, the Duke of Devonshire gets a haircut and the house’s “floral designer”, responsible for the annual Florabundance Festival, has a tulip emergency.

Summary

The second visit to the Derbyshire stately home sees the Duchess of Devonshire at the highlight of her social calendar, Chatsworth International Horse Trials. This year there is extra pressure as the event is an official qualifier for the London Olympics, so the course has to meet the governing body's exacting standards. The 2011 season also sees the home's third annual flower festival, although the unusually warm spring weather makes the tulips flower early, leaving floral designer Jonathan Moseley 5,000 blooms short just days ahead of the grand opening. And there is drama in the dining room when members of the public complain about the table settings.
