S1-E5 Let's Be Bad

It’s liaisons à gogo tonight as leading man Michael pursues songwriter Julia, serenading her on her brownstone stoop, while fellow scribe Tom hits the sheets with lawyer John and both end up breathless with mirth. Director Derek humiliates Ivy in rehearsals, so she, in turn, snaps like a bitch supreme to the lovely Karen.

Ivy (Megan Hilty) may be an unlovable star but there’s no denying she’s terrific as a doped-up Marilyn Monroe in a new, fully staged production number, Let’s Be Bad. It’s Karen, though, who delivers the showstopper. Inspired to unleash her sexuality by gentle boyfriend Dev (Raza Jaffrey so different from Zafar, the role he played in Spooks), she sings James Brown’s It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World alone to herself while disrobing in front of her mirror. And Katharine McPhee’s voice is, as ever, achingly beautiful.

Derek grows frustrated with Ivy's inability to capture Marilyn Monroe's singing style, and asks Karen to tutor her. Julia panics when Leo is arrested while Frank is away - though she is also worried that she might be developing feelings for Michael again. Meanwhile, Dev challenges Karen to embrace her sexuality. Musical drama, starring Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty.
