The Big Bang Theory

S5-E21 The Hawking Excitation

S5-E21 The Hawking Excitation

Just as Spock-themed episodes, and the occasional return of Bob Newhart, always bring extra laughs to The Big Bang Theory, so does a cameo from Stephen Hawking. E4 honours the birthday boy (75 on 8 January!) with five of his starring episodes (he’s actually been in six so far).

The mischievous sense of fun of the former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge lends itself well to the boff-com, and even when we can’t see him, his contribution is hilarious.

In the early episodes he’s quite the tease (“What do Sheldon Cooper and a black hole have in common? They both suck”), but as a hero figure to Sheldon (Jim Parsons), the prof is increasingly there with sage advice, too.

Howard is put in charge of looking after Stephen Hawking's wheelchair when the famous scientist comes to lecture at the university for a week - and takes advantage of his position to blackmail Sheldon into performing assorted unpleasant tasks. Guest starring Stephen Hawking.
